The 20-year-old newcomer puts a pop spin on the track, beginning the video singing alone in an empty street. As he progresses through the song, he finds other down-and-out young people sitting on curbs and offers his hand to them. United, they gain strength.
“I decided to cover ‘Skyscraper’ because its an uplifting message,” the singer said. “And coming from an artist like Demi, who has recently experienced the troubles of life, it’s really a song that connects and resonates with today’s youth, myself included.”
The sentiment of Burnette’s video is uplifting, but the cover falls short of evoking the same level of power that Lovato’s original does. Jordin Sparks’ webcam rendition gave us more goosebumps than this, but we appreciate the singer’s Bruno Mars-like cadence and are interested to see what else he has up his sleeve when his debut album arrives.
Burnette is the son of ’80s R&B singer O’Bryan. He has posted several covers on his YouTube page, including John Mayer‘s ‘Daughters’ and Lil Wayne‘s ‘How to Love,’ the latter of which has logged over 320,000 views.
