Memorial Remembers the Five People Killed at Indiana State Fair Concert

A memorial was held this morning to commemorate the five men and women who were tragically killed when the stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 13. A gust of wind blew through the region, at nearly 70 MPH, causing the mobile structure to tumble to the ground, injuring 40 other people, as well. Sara Bareilles had just finished performing, with country duo Sugarland set to headline. Needless to say, Sugarland never performed.
According to WRTV in Indianapolis, hundreds of people attended the 9AM ceremony, as the area is still reeling from the aftermath of this horrific tragedy. “We all need to grieve, and I think it’s important that we come together and do that,” Mayor Greg Ballard said. “I want people to understand that we do feel for them.” The entire music community has been rocked to its core by this incident, that’s for sure. We’re all grieving with the state of Indiana.
The staff at the fair had been monitoring the weather via the National Weather Service and were in the process of determining evacuation plans, but the wind tore through the area quickly and Mother Nature came in stronger and faster than expected.
