Madonna Crowned Queen of Pop, According to RS Readers’ Poll

Madonna Crowned Queen of Pop by Rolling Stone Readers

Last week, Rolling Stone named Lady Gaga this generation’s Queen of Pop, but when the magazine polled its readers, Madonna won their vote by a landslide.

To be fair, Rolling Stone used their own index to rank 16 female pop singers, and only examined data from the last two years. Madonna’s last release was 2008′s ‘Hard Candy,’ so she didn’t make the original cut.
However, the readers’ poll allowed fans to vote for pop stars spanning several decades, and while Gaga came in at No. 2, Madge earned five times as many votes as the ‘Born This Way’ singer. Gaga may have had meteoric success in the last few years, but, according to pop lovers, her achievements pale in comparison to Madonna’s 30-year career.

Readers also voted for timeless pop stars like Mariah Carey, Elton John, Cher, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner, in addition to the likes of relative newcomers Katy Perry, Beyonce, and Britney Spears, who rounded out the readers’ Top 10.

Using Rolling Stone’s index, Gaga earned the Queen of Pop title by squashing the competition with her impressive album and singles sales. The singer’s final score was 1205, smoking runner-up Taylor Swift, who came in at No. 2 with 881 points.
