Miley Cyrus Performs Sad Cover of Gorillaz’s ‘On Melancholy Hill’ 8:14 PM
On July 2, Miley Cyrus made Gorillaz’s ‘On Melancholy Hill’ her latest victim when she covered the song in Perth, Australia on the final night of her Gypsy Heart tour.
The beloved mid-tempo song, which is featured on the UK band’s 2010 album ‘Plastic Beach,’ has an ethereal and whimsical quality, which the 18-year-old managed to eliminate entirely with her rendition, turning the tune into a, well, melancholy ballad.
Perhaps attempting to channel Stevie Nicks with her affected vocal delivery, Cyrus ironically sang a sad version of the airy single as a celebratory “anniversary gift” for two of her back-up dancers. The teen star explained to the audience that this was the couple’s last tour before getting married.
Once the video hit the Web, Gorillaz fans expressed appalled opinions about the cover. One YouTube user wrote: “Deaf people are lucky.” Meanwhile, Buzzfeed posted the video with the description: “This happened because you let it happen, America.”
This isn’t the first time Cyrus has butchered a classic tune — the Disney Channel alum has covered Poison’s ‘Every Rose Has Its Thorn’ and Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ resulting in comparable backlash from bloggers and music lovers all over.
