Demi Lovato Pours Raw Emotion in New ‘Skyscraper’ Video

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato appeared on E! News to premiere her new music video for her latest No. 1 single, ‘Skyscraper,’ a reach-for-the-sky hit which touches on dark clouds for the Disney star.
As the video opens, we see Demi’s figure off in the distance, walking down a path made in the sand. As the camera pulls into her face, it’s clear that she’s distraught as she starts to sing, “Skies are crying / I am watching / Catching teardrops in my hands,” almost on the verge of real tears.
That makes sense, considering the reason Demi appeared on E! News in the first place. In the same hour as the ‘Skyscraper’ video debut, the Disney star sat down to talk with Ryan Seacrest about her depression, bi-polar disorder and eating disorder.

When the shot pulls away from Demi’s distressed face in the video, we see that she’s wearing a flowy white dress and walking slowly, never breaking a smile. In the empty dessert, it’s just the teen and a clear block with a red heart in it, symbolic of the line about her being “made of glass.”
As the song grows more powerful, so does the 18-year-old star. She walks steadier, faster, and with more emotion, and the camera makes obvious shots to a religious cross on her hand. Around the point of the bridge, the singer’s indestructible block shatters and exposes her raw heart.
The song comes from a very personal place in Demi’s life, and the video makes that a tangible reality for young fans. Demi wants her struggles to be a lesson for them, and in an open letter, urges that anyone who needs help should ask for it. “This song is so special to me because it’s inspired by my journey and the struggles that I’ve dealt with this past year. I hope people are able to relate to it and realize that they are able to rise above and overcome any obstacle, no matter the circumstances, and shine like a skyscraper,” she says of the song.
She continues, “I am still on a personal journey dealing with my own issues each and every day, but the best advice I can give to anyone going through a rough patch is to never be afraid to ask for help.”
‘Skyscraper’ is currently No. 1 on iTunes.
